Tensions flared in Madurai as several pro-Hindu groups clashed with the Tamil Nadu police over preparations for the Karthigai Deepam festival at the Subramaniya Swamy Temple. The confrontation occurred after temple authorities reportedly failed to comply with a Tamil Nadu High Court directive to light the ceremonial lamp on the ancient Deepathoon by 6:00 p.m. yesterday.

Members from four Hindu organisations, including activist Rama Ravikumar of Hindu Makkal Katchi, had sought permission to light the lamp. When the deadline was missed, supporters gathered and attempted to climb Thiruparankundram hill to light the lamp themselves, leading to scuffles with police personnel who tried to stop them. Heavy barricading and police presence were observed on the ground.
