A 24-year-old Tripura student, Angel Chakma, has tragically died after sustaining injuries in a brutal racist attack in Dehradun. The incident occurred when Angel and his younger brother, Michael, were confronted by a group of men who hurled racial slurs, questioning their identity and calling them "Chinese."
When Angel defended his brother, asserting their Indian nationality, the situation escalated violently. He was reportedly attacked with knives and blunt objects, succumbing to his injuries two weeks later in hospital.
Angel’s father, BSF jawan Tarun Chakma, alleged initial police delay in registering an FIR, which was eventually filed after intervention from the All India Chakma Students Union and senior officials. Following Angels death, his body was flown to Agartala, where local communities expressed deep outrage.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Shah has discussed the matter with Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, who confirmed five arrests and assured justice. However, the main accused, Yagya Avasthi, is still at large, believed to be in Nepal, with a ₹25,000 reward announced for his capture. The incident has intensified demands for stronger laws against racial discrimination.
