Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh has triggered a significant political row following his remarks concerning the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Singh controversially linked the atrocities in Bangladesh to what he termed a "crackdown on minorities in India," stating, "This is a reaction to the actions against minorities in India."
He further claimed that fundamentalist forces in India are continuously targeting minorities, with repercussions felt in neighbouring countries.
While condemning the attacks on Bangladeshi Hindus as a "blot on humanity" and a human rights concern, urging the central government to act, his initial comparison drew swift condemnation.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly rebuked Singh, accusing him of making irresponsible and anti-national statements. BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma questioned Singh’s loyalty, suggesting his comments virtually justified the lynching of Deepu Chandra Das in Bangladesh. The incident has intensified the political debate surrounding minority rights and international relations.
