DMK-Led Alliance Protests against Centre's VB-G RAM G Bill Over Alleged MGNREGA Repeal

The Secular Progressive Alliance, led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), is conducting statewide protests across Tamil Nadu today against the Centres newly enacted Viksit Bharat guarantee for Rozgar and Ajivika Mission Bill, 2025.

This proposed legislation has drawn significant opposition due to allegations that it seeks to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), a flagship social security programme that has supported millions of rural households for nearly two decades.

The DMK and its alliance partners have characterised the move as a direct attack on rural livelihoods and an attempt to dilute the crucial 100-day employment scheme. The ongoing protests aim to mobilise MGNREGA beneficiaries, district secretaries, Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), local body representatives, and party cadres from the alliance parties.

Opposition to the VB-G RAM G Bill has intensified in Tamil Nadu since 18th December, when the state government officially communicated its objections to Prime Minister Modi regarding the proposed legislation. The alliance asserts that the Centres bill threatens the livelihoods of those dependent on the existing rural employment scheme.
