The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), currently governing Andhra Pradesh and a key ally within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has initiated a challenge against the Election Commission of India (ECI)s special intensive revision of electoral rolls. This action follows the removal of nearly 38 lakh names from Bihar's voter list, raising concerns about potential disenfranchisement on a broader scale.
The TDP's concerns, articulated in a letter addressed to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar by parliamentary leader Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and five other Andhra Pradesh MPs, centre on several key issues. Firstly, the party questions the timing of the revision, suggesting that undertaking such a process within six months of a major election is problematic.
They propose that sufficient notice should be given before any special revision commences. Secondly, the TDP advocates for a presumption of inclusion for those already registered on the electoral rolls. Re-establishing eligibility should only be required when there is credible evidence to the contrary.
This directly addresses concerns about the potential for arbitrary removals from the voter list. Thirdly, the TDPs letter emphasizes the need to decouple citizenship checks from the electoral roll revision.
