From bandit to tourism: Robinhood Sultana Daku’s British-era jail in Haridwar to be revived as tourism spot

The Tourism Department in Uttarakhand is planning to connect the British‑era jail in Shyampur, Haridwar, with adventure tourism. Linked to the legendary bandit Sultana Daku, the site could attract visitors and boost local development if integrated with jungle safaris and heritage tours.

Haridwar: Uttarakhand is known for its blend of religious and adventure tourism, and now a new plan is in motion to add history to the mix. The British‑era jail in Shyampur, once associated with the infamous bandit Sultana Daku, may soon be developed as an adventure tourism destination.

The ruined building, nearly 125 years old, was once used by the British as a police station and jail. Local residents call it the "British jail,” and its history is tied to Sultana Daku, who was considered a terror for the British and exploitative moneylenders in the early 20th century. According to local accounts, when Sultana was captured by a special officer named Freddie Young, he was kept in this jail for about twenty days.

Tourism Department are working on a plan

Officials from the Tourism Department are working on a plan to preserve the building and integrate it with the Jhilmil Lake Safari, a popular adventure tourism spot nearby. District Tourism Officer Sushil Nautiyal said that efforts are being made to highlight Sultana Daku’s connection to the jail and promote it as a historical attraction. He added that the younger generation is eager to learn about such sites, and linking them with adventure tourism will provide both education and entertainment.

Robinhood image among the people

Sultana Daku is remembered in folk tales across Haridwar, Bijnor, Kotdwar, and Moradabad. Often described as a "Robin Hood” figure, he was known for robbing the British and wealthy landlords while helping the poor. His fort in Najibabad already attracts tourists, and locals believe that if the Shyampur jail is promoted as part of his story, it will draw visitors from across the country.

A movie was also made on Sultana Daku

Narrating the life of Sultana Daku, a movie was made in 1972 which was directed by Mohammed Hussain, starring Dara Singh and Helen. The movie portrays the legendary outlaw Sultana Daku, who fought against British imperialists, blending action, history, and patriotism in a gripping cinematic narrative.

Recognition of the site will also bring economic benefits to the area

Residents have demanded that the jail be developed as a tourist destination. They argue that recognition of the site will not only preserve history but also bring economic benefits to the area. With Haridwar already attracting millions of pilgrims for Ganga bathing and temple visits, adding adventure and heritage tourism could diversify the region’s appeal.

The plan includes exploring Sultana Daku’s old lake in the area and linking it with jungle safaris. Tourists would then be able to enjoy wildlife viewing while also visiting historical sites. Officials believe this combination will appeal to both domestic and foreign tourists.

New destination for history lovers, adventure seekers, and pilgrims alike

Locals say that farming and small businesses in Shyampur could benefit from increased tourist traffic. Shops, guides, and homestays may see new opportunities if the jail is developed as a heritage site. The Tourism Department hopes that integrating the jail with adventure tourism will create a new destination for history lovers, adventure seekers, and pilgrims alike.
