Nainital celebrates 184th birthday: Uttarakhand's 'Lake City' mentioned in ancient texts, Peter Barron introduced to world

Nainital : Every year on November 18, Nainital celebrates its “birthday,” marking the day in 1841 when Peter Barron wrote about this beautiful Himalayan lake town. For many people, Barron is known as the man who discovered Nainital. But the real history of Nainital is much older and richer than this simple story. Local people of Kumaon had known about Nainital for hundreds of years before Barron ever set foot there. The region is mentioned in ancient texts, especially the Skanda Purana, written around the eighth century. One section of this text, called Manaskhand, describes many parts of Kumaon in remarkable detail. It talks about rivers, forests, mountains, and even lakes—just like a traditional map. Seven lakes region was mentioned in Manaskhand Manaskhand mentions that the Gargi River (today’s Gaula) originates near the Gagar mountain, exactly as it does today. It also describes seven lakes of the region. These include Trishi (today’s Nainital), Navakona...

Kedarnath : When the doors of the sacred Kedarnath shrine closed on October 23, silence returned to the high Himalayan valley. But beneath that silence lay the heavy remains of the pilgrimage season—mountains of garbage left by nearly 17.68 lakh devotees who had visited the holy site over six months. What followed was one of the biggest clean-up efforts the region had ever seen. This year, more than 2,324 tons of waste were collected from Kedarnath Dham, its trekking route, and the nearby markets and stops. This included everything from plastic bottles and raincoats to discarded food packaging, horse and mule dung, and other waste left behind by thousands of daily visitors. Compared to the previous year, the waste had increased by more than 325 tons, a rise that worried both environmental workers and local authorities. Increasing pilgrims ' footfall mounting pressure on fragile mountains Kedarnath, located deep in the Himalayan region, has always welcomed pilgrims with devotion...

Another village in Uttarakhand turns empty due to migration; ‘Ghost Villages’ number grows in hills

Bageshwar : In the peaceful hills of Bageshwar district, Chauni village now stands silent. Once home to over 300 people, the village has turned into a ghost village—a place where houses remain, but people are gone. This is not a new story in Uttarakhand. Over the years, many villages in the state’s hilly regions have seen a steady migration of families. The reasons are many—lack of jobs, poor roads, no schools or hospitals, and limited access to basic services. People, especially the youth, are moving to cities in search of better opportunities. All the people moved to nearby towns or cities Chauni is the latest example. Located in Kapkot block, the village had 65 families. Today, only a few elderly people remain. The rest have moved to nearby towns or cities like Haldwani, Almora, and Dehradun. Some have even gone to Delhi and other metro cities. Local school has no student The village now has locked homes, broken walls, and empty courtyards. The local school has no students....
