Dehradun: The weather in Uttarakhand continues to remain challenging. While recent rains have brought some relief from dry cold, fog in the plains and snowfall in the mountains are causing fresh difficulties.
The Meteorological Center has issued a yellow fog alert for Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, while light fog is expected in Dehradun, Pauri, Nainital, and Champawat.
Fog in plains, chill in mountains
On Thursday morning, Dehradun witnessed light fog, reducing visibility. Morning and evening temperatures have dropped sharply following snowfall in the higher regions. Bright sunshine during the day provides some relief, but the chill persists in the mornings and evenings, making life uncomfortable for residents.
Avalanche warning in four districts
The State Disaster Operations Center has issued a high‑risk avalanche warning for Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh. The Defense Geoinformatics Research Establishment, Chandigarh, has predicted avalanches between 5 a.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday. Heavy snowfall in these districts has increased the risk of avalanches or reactivation of old ones.
Bageshwar has been placed in the moderate‑risk category. Authorities have been instructed to remain vigilant and keep disaster management resources on alert. District magistrates have been directed to monitor sensitive areas closely and ensure readiness to respond to any emergency.
Hardships for residents
Snowfall has cut off communication between many villages in the mountains. Residents are facing difficulties with electricity and water supply. In several areas, power lines have been damaged, and water sources are frozen, adding to the hardships of daily life.
Farmers and villagers are particularly worried as the cold wave continues to affect crops and livestock. In the plains, fog has disrupted transport, with reduced visibility making driving risky.
Administration on alert
The State Emergency Operations Center has directed district officials to remain on high alert. Disaster management teams are prepared to respond quickly if avalanches occur. Authorities have also urged locals and travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys in high‑risk areas and to follow safety guidelines.
Uttarakhand is facing a dual challenge of fog in the plains and avalanche threats in the mountains. While sunshine during the day offers some relief, the persistent chill, snowfall, and warnings have kept residents and officials on edge. Vigilance and preparedness remain the key to ensuring safety in the coming days.
