Kolkata: The Indian Navy added a new warship named Himgiri to its arsenal on July 30, and it has boosted the strength of the powerful force.
It was delivered to the Indian Navy by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Limited. Notably, the Himgiri is the first of three advanced frigates that the GRSE is constructing under Project 17A.
The GRSE had made 800 ships before Himgiri, one of its best products. The length of the ship is 149 meters, and it weighs around 6,760 tonnes. Among the warships made by the GRSE, it is the largest and most modern. Among the 801 ships that it has made, 112 are warships, the highest number for any shipyard in this country. Under Project 17A, the total cost of the three warships is more than Rs 21,833 crore.
According to an official statement, the Project 17A is also helping the economy of our country. A relevant portion of its value has helped in the growth of MSMEs, start-ups, and OEMs in building the ship.
The ship was accepted on behalf of the Indian Navy by Rear Admiral Ravnish Seth, a Chief Staff Officer (Technical), Eastern Naval Command. It was first launched on December 14, 2020.
Among the weapons of the warship are the BrahMos and Barak 8 missiles. Also, it has the AESA radar system and other advanced systems to detect and fight aerial threats, as well as those coming from sea and underwater. The warship gets its power from diesel engines and gas turbines, and can survive any battle situation.
