Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil Faces Arrest After Bail Rejection in Rape Case
Suspended Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil is preparing to approach the High Court for anticipatory bail following the rejection of his plea by a Thiruvananthapuram court in a rape case. Police are moving ahead with his arrest, potentially requiring him to surrender if not taken into custody.
Mamkootathil faces multiple serious charges, including rape on the pretext of marriage, repeated sexual assault, and forced abortion. The First Information Report (FIR) invokes eight non-bailable sections of the BNS, covering offences punishable with jail terms ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment. The survivor submitted her complaint directly to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, which was then forwarded to senior police officers, leading to the registration of the FIR.
Politically, Rahul Mamkootathil has been expelled from the Congress by KPCC President Sunny Joseph due to the seriousness of the allegations. Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar has criticised the Congress, alleging the party protected Mamkootathil despite being aware of his track record.
