He has also been instructed not to destroy evidence, to cooperate with the investigation, and not to influence witnesses in any manner.
The case pertains to a complaint filed by a 23-year-old woman from Bengaluru, who alleged that she was assaulted in 2023 on the promise of marriage. The police had submitted the woman’s statement before the court as part of the proceedings.
The Thiruvananthapuram Principal Sessions Court’s order comes as a major relief to the legislator, who had been absconding for the last 13 days in connection with the case.
Earlier, the court had denied anticipatory bail in the first sexual assault case observing the seriousness of the allegations.
That case included charges of rape and coercion to terminate a pregnancy under relevant provisions of law.
Following the bail rejection, the Congress expelled Rahul Mamkoottathil from the party, stating that it acted to uphold organisational discipline and credibility.
After the first case was registered, Mamkootathil moved the Kerala High Court seeking relief, which granted him interim protection from arrest. Meanwhile, a second complaint surfaced, leading to the registration of another case and the formation of a Special Investigation Team to probe the fresh allegations.
Rahul Easwar remand extended
Meanwhile, Rahul Easwar, the right wing activist who was arrested for posting the identity of the survivor and using derogatory language will be under police custody for one more day.
Rahul Easwar while speaking to the media said that he welcomes the bail granted for Rahul Mamkoottathil and added that he is being unnecessarily being taken into custody by the police.
