Kremlin Defends Indias Right to Purchase Russian Oil Amidst US Pressure

| Updated on: Dec 09, 2025 | 08:12 AM

The Kremlin has unequivocally backed Indias decision to continue purchasing Russian oil, asserting that New Delhi will act in its own economic interest despite pressure from Washington.

This stance comes after US President Donald Trump reportedly doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50% in August, accusing India of indirectly funding Russias military actions through its acquisition of discounted crude.

During a recent visit to New Delhi, President Vladimir Putin reinforced Russia's commitment to Indias energy security, offering assurances of uninterrupted fuel supplies. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated that India, as a sovereign state, is expected to source energy where it is most advantageous. Russia's statement indicates strong confidence that India will not alter its current oil procurement strategy, regardless of international pressure or US tariffs.
