New Delhi: In a major crackdown, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) has found that major mall eateries in Lucknow had failed to meet the prescribed standards. The FSDA officers carried out surprise inspections in these shopping malls on Tuesday.
As many as 14 teams simultaneously raided seven establishments and inspected 61 food outlets. Most of them were found with irregularities. Two major outlets were completely shut down and one KFC outlet was ordered to stop operations, while more than 35 others were served notices.
The biggest action was that the Lulu Hypermarket (in Lulu Mall) was completely sealed. Lulu Hypermarket is accused of blatantly tampering with the manufacturing dates of food items. There were also attempts to extend the expiry dates, and the licence too did not meet the required standards, sources said.
During this operation, Dabru The Chaap in Lulu Mall was also sealed. This outlet was operating without an FSSAI licence. During the raid, the operator could not produce licence.
Besides, KFC’s operations at Cinepolis Mall were stopped. The inspection found extreme filth in the kitchen. Officials ordered it to remain closed until cleanliness and improvements are carried out.
Popular food outlets like Chili’s, Barbeque Nation, Bikaner Express (Lulu Mall), Subway, Punjab Grill, Royal Café, Wow! Momo (Palassio Mall), Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Burger King, Moti Mahal Deluxe, The Big Grill, and Street Foods by Punjab Grill — among others — were found with irregularities in a total of 51 outlets. Only 10 were completely clean and met all standards.
It is worth noting that the FSDA inspected 61 food outlets across seven malls — Lulu, Palassio, Cinepolis, Fun Republic, Emerald, Wave, and Phoenix (Kanpur Road). Of these, two were completely shut down, operations at one of the outlets were halted, and 35 were issued notices. Meanwhile, samples of 13 products were sent to the lab. Food safety officials pointed out that endangering the health of customers who pay to eat will not be tolerated.
