New Delhi: In a development that has created ripples in Indian politics, the BJP teamed up with Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Power in Maharashtra for a municipal council.

Now, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the state unit of the saffron party to break its alliances with Congress and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in two municipal councils, calling the tie-ups “unacceptable”. The alliance with Congress was formed to secure a majority in the Ambernath Municipal Council in Thane district.

What has Fadnavis said on the issue?

The Maharashtra CM said, "Alliance with Congress and AIMIM is not acceptable. It will have to be broken. Accordingly, directives have been issued. The matter will be looked into, and disciplinary action will be taken if anybody has violated orders. The BJP cannot accept an alliance with Congress or MIM. We have made it clear."

The tie-ups in Ambernath and Akot took place before the January 15 municipal council polls. Notably, Maharashtra Congress chief Harshavardhan Sapkal has also spoken out against the alliance with the BJP.

BJP's alliance with Congress

In Ambernath, the BJP joined hands with Congress and the NCP of Ajit Pawar to keep Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena out of power. The saffron party formed the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi, and a letter to this effect was submitted to the Thane district collector. Notably, the Sena emerged as the single largest party there, and the BJP registered the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi to grab power.

BJP and AIMIM join hands

In Vidarbha's Akot municipal council, the BJP formed the ‘Akot Vikas Manch’ (Akot Development Forum) with the AIMIM. This alliance also has both Shiv Sena factions (Thackeray and Shinde), both NCP factions (Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar), and Bachchu Kadu’s Prahar Janshakti Party.
