New Delhi: Maharashtra cabinet minister Manikrao Kokate was stripped of his ministerial portfolios on Wednesday after his conviction in an old case by a Nashik district court.
Kokate was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for allegedly preparing forged documents and misappropriating flats allotted under the chief minister's quota. His brother, Vijay Kokate, was also convicted in the case. Kokate has challenged the verdict before the Bombay High Court.
Portfolios transferred to Ajit Pawar
On the recommendation of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Governor approved the transfer of all portfolios held by Kokate, Sports and Youth Welfare and Minority Development and Aukaf, to deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.
The case relates to the alleged illegal occupation of houses meant for economically weaker sections by submitting forged documents. The complaint was originally filed in 1995 by former minister Tukaram Dighole. After his death, his daughter intervened in the proceedings to pursue the case.
Three-decade long battle
After a prolonged legal battle spanning nearly three decades, the Nashik district court found Kokate and his brother guilty, triggering political fallout within the state government.
Kokate continues to be a sitting legislator but might face disqualifications. A non-bailable warrant was also issued against him.
