Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of Opposition, addressed the Rajya Sabha at the commencement of the Winter Session, extending congratulations to the newly appointed Chairman. In his address, Kharge underscored the critical importance of impartiality and fairness in parliamentary proceedings.
Kharge cited Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnans 1952 acceptance speech, where the first Vice President stated, "I belong to no party... I belong to every party in this house," and pledged to uphold parliamentary traditions with "fairness and impartiality." Kharge highlighted Radhakrishnan’s warning that democracy risks degeneration if opposition groups are not allowed free and frank criticism of government policies.
The Leader of Opposition assured the Chairman of the Indian National Congresss cooperation in conducting house proceedings smoothly, emphasising their commitment to constitutional values and structured debates.
He also noted the Chairman's namesake connection to Radhakrishnan and his familys ties to the Congress party through his uncle, Shri C.K. Kuppuswamy. Kharge concluded by expressing confidence in the Chairmans ability to treat both opposition and treasury benches with equal measure and maintain balance.
