The tragic death of a 20-year-old B.Ed student at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, Odisha, has sent shockwaves across the state and nation. The student, whose identity has not been publicly released, succumbed to severe burns after setting herself ablaze on campus. Her act followed accusations of repeated sexual harassment and mental torture by Samira Kumar Sahu, the Head of the Education Department at the college.

The young womans desperate act has sparked intense public anger and grief. Congress leaders organised candlelight protests, demanding swift action and accountability from the ruling BJP government in Odisha. The protests highlight the growing concern over the safety and security of female students in educational institutions across India.

The students allegations of inaction and lack of support from the college administration further fuel the outrage. Her desperate plea for help went unanswered, leaving her feeling vulnerable and without recourse. This failure of the institutional mechanisms designed to protect students underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in addressing sexual harassment within educational environments.

In response to the incident, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has formed a four-member fact-finding panel to investigate the case thoroughly. The panels mandate includes investigating the allegations of sexual harassment, scrutinising whether the college adhered to established anti-harassment protocols, and recommending corrective measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
