Uttarakhand weather update: Dense fog alert for six districts, travel and tourism hit due to poor visibility
The Meteorological Department has issued a dense fog alert for six districts of Uttarakhand, including Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. While fog is disrupting life in the plains, frost and biting cold are troubling people in the hills, with pollution levels adding to the crisis.
Dehradun: Uttarakhand is reeling under prolonged dry weather, which has worsened conditions across both plains and hills. Dense fog has gripped Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a yellow alert.
In the plains, visibility has dropped sharply during morning and late‑night hours, making road and rail travel hazardous. The Met office has appealed to drivers to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary night journeys.
Trains and air travel affected badly due to the poor visibility
Train schedules have already been affected, with delays reported due to poor visibility. Air travel too has suffered, as 11 flights, including those from Delhi, Bengaluru, and Pune, arrived late at Dehradun airport on Thursday.
Pollution adds to woes
The absence of rain has worsened air pollution. Dehradun’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 280 on Thursday, after touching 322 on Wednesday. Officials say AQI levels have been deteriorating steadily for the past week, raising health concerns for residents. Experts warn that prolonged dry weather is trapping pollutants in the atmosphere, making breathing difficult and affecting tourism.
Changing temperatures
While fog dominates the plains, frost has intensified cold in the hilly districts. Villagers report difficulties in daily life, especially for children and the elderly. At the same time, daytime temperatures are rising unusually high due to the dry spell, creating discomfort for locals and tourists alike.
Cold day conditions may develop in parts of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar
The Meteorological Center has cautioned that cold day conditions may develop in parts of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. However, relief is expected soon, with rain and snowfall predicted in mountainous areas on December 20 and 21. The weather is likely to remain dry again between December 22 and 24.
Impact on tourism
Tourism, a key sector for Uttarakhand, is beginning to feel the impact. Reduced visibility, delayed transport, and rising pollution levels are discouraging visitors. Hoteliers in Nainital and Mussoorie say bookings have slowed, while travelers complain of disrupted schedules.
IMD has urged residents to stay alert
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely. The Met Department has urged residents to stay alert, especially during foggy hours, and to take precautions against pollution and cold. With rain and snowfall expected in the coming days, people hope for some respite from the prolonged dry spell that has disrupted life across Uttarakhand.
