Uttarakhand weather update: Frost grips hills, yellow alert for fog in six districts; snowfall likely from Jan 17

Dehradun: The cold wave continues to affect life across Uttarakhand. From the mountains to the plains, the weather remains dry, with frost in hilly areas and dense fog in the plains making daily life difficult. The Meteorological Center has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in six districts—Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, Nainital, Champawat, and Pauri.

On Monday, thick fog is expected in these regions, reducing visibility and increasing travel risks. In the hills, frost has intensified the cold. Night temperatures in Mussoorie dipped below freezing, causing water in the Company Garden lake to freeze. Similar conditions are being reported from other high-altitude areas.

Dry weather continues

Although sunshine during the day is providing some relief, mornings and evenings remain bitterly cold. The Meteorological Department has predicted that the weather will remain dry across the state until January 16.

Schools timing changed

In light of the extreme cold and frost warnings, Dehradun District Magistrate Savin Bansal has ordered that schools from grades 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centers will operate only after 8:30 a.m. until January 31. The move aims to protect children from the biting morning cold.

Residents say the absence of rain and snowfall has created a spell of dry cold, which feels harsher than usual. Frost in the hills is damaging crops, while fog in the plains is slowing daily routines.

According to forecasts, the activation of a western disturbance on January 17 may bring light rain and snowfall to the mountainous areas. This change is expected to ease the dry cold and provide much-needed moisture to the soil and crops.
