Kolkata: The Election Commission of India executed the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) of the Bihar voters' list ahead of the Assembly elections in the state this year. Now, as per reports, the ECI is going to implement the SIR in Bengal. Notably, the state will witness Assembly elections early next year.

Meanwhile, the ECI has started publishing the voters' list of the state from 2002. And while doing so, the Commission found something which not only baffled them, but has also raised a major concern. They reportedly found that the voters' lists for 2002 of four Assembly constituencies in two districts of the state are not available. TV9 Bangla has reported this, citing sources in the Commission.

What has the ECI found out?

There is a political battle going on regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters' list. The speculation that SIR is going to happen in Bengali is increasing. The last time that SIR happened in Bengal was about two decades ago.

It took place way back in 2002. Now, as the ECI has started to publish the 2002 voters' list even before the announcement of the SIR, they have come across the surprising fact. Out of the 294 Assembly constituencies, the ECI has so far published the voters' lists for 103 Assembly constituencies. The commission will publish the voters' lists for the remaining constituencies in phases.

According to the ECI sources, while publishing the voters' list, it found that the lists of one Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas and three Assembly constituencies in Birbhum are not available. The constituencies are Kulpi in South 24 Parganas and Murarai, Rampurhat and Rajnagar in Birbhum.

The ECI has directed the district magistrates to find out the voters' lists. According to district administration sources, in 2002, there was no facility to upload information on computers like today's age. As a result, it is not possible to find out the voters' list now, and efforts are being made to unearth it. As per ECI sources, if the voters' list is not found, the commission will have to rely on the draft voters' list of 2003.
