New Delhi: As we step into September 2025, along with the brisk air of autumn, it also promises us opportunities to watch some of the most spectacular celestial phenomena. Stargazers of all levels would be astonished to see celestial events of every kind – total lunar eclipse, rare planetary alignments, and great views of galaxies and globular clusters.
September 2025 is a great opportunity for astrophotographers, astronomers, and sky gazers alike. During September 2025, bright planets of the solar system, like Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune, along with the dark, black sky around the moon, will enhance the visibility for hard-to-find stars and the Milky Way’s galactic core. With all these events happening in the sky, September 2025 will be remembered by anyone who loves to explore the wonder of the universe.
September 2025 will truly be a spectacular month to watch with all the meteor showers, lunar phases, and planetary alignments. Below are the dazzling celestial displays that are perfect for both casual observers and avid astronomers.
1. Total lunar eclipse: September 7
A total lunar eclipse, also known as Chandra Grahan, is all set to happen on the evening of September 7. During this period, the moon will turn into a glowing red orb, gaining the title of Blood Moon. A total lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon.
2. Alignment of Moon, Saturn, and Neptune: September 8
Another top celestial event of 2025 is the perfect alignment of the Moon, Saturn, and Neptune. This will make all of them appear very close to each other in the sky. People will be able to see Saturn with their naked eyes as it will shine the brightest. However, to view Neptune, one will require binoculars.
3. Moon and Jupiter conjunction: September 16
The crescent Moon will appear very close to Jupiter, within about 4.5 degrees, in the early hours of September 16. Jupiter can be seen with the naked eye. With the help of a telescope, you may also get to see Jupiter's Galilean moons.
4. Venus passes behind the Moon: September 19
Venus will pass directly behind the Moon, a phenomenon known as an occultation. The planet will appear very close to the Moon in the predawn sky. It will be visible across Europe, Greenland, parts of Canada and Africa.
5. Saturn at its brightest: September 21
Two celestial events will occur on September 21. With no moonlight in the night, it is ideal for stargazing and astrophotography. You can look for the Milky Way Galaxy, star clusters and the bright galactic core. In addition to this, Saturn will reach opposite the Sun, making it look brighter than usual. But it will be difficult to spot Saturn's rings at this point.
6. Partial solar eclipse: September 22
A partial solar eclipse will occur on September 22. It happens when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, blocking only 85 per cent of it. It will be visible in the South Pacific and parts of Antarctica.
7. Neptune at its brightest: September 23
Neptune will be directly opposite the Sun in the sky and will shine the brightest. The interesting thing about this is that Neptune will be the closest to Earth this year. Since Neptune is the farthest planet in the solar system, it cannot be seen with the naked eye.
8. String of pearls galaxy: September 24
Stargazers will have the opportunity to observe NGC 55, a galaxy also known as Caldwell 72 or the String of Pearls galaxy. The name, ‘string of pearls,’ denotes an elongated shape that looks like pearls attached together in a string.
The night sky of September 2025 looks very promising. With celestial events occurring so frequently, the September 2025 sky is worth noticing. Whether you are a casual sky gazer or have a passion for celestial events, be ready, as September 2025 is going to bring a lot of sky wonders.
