Asia Cup 2025: Abhishek Sharma scripts history, bags twin records against Pakistan

New Delhi: Abhishek Sharma created history in the ongoing Asia Cup Super 4 match between India and Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, September 21. Chasing the 172-run target, the Men in Blue got off to a flying start as Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill stitched a 105-run partnership for the first wicket.

Abhishek smashed Shaheen Afridi for a maximum over fine leg on the first ball, and joined the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson in the list of Indian batters hitting the first ball maximum in the T20I innings.

They smashed boundaries at regular intervals to put pressure on Pakistan's bowlers, and added 69 runs in the power play. A few words were exchanged between players from both sides after the end of the fifth over.

Gill called Rauf after the ball went for four, and after that, it looked like the bowler had a go at Abhishek Sharma who responded in kind. Abhishek scored 74 runs off 39 balls, smashing five maximums and four boundaries, and was eventually removed by Abrar Ahmed in the 13th over.

Abhishek surpassed Yuvraj Singh's record to hit the fastest half-century against Pakistan. Yuvraj smashed a 29-ball fifty against the arch-rivals in Ahmedabad, 2012, while Abhishek completed his half-century in just 24 balls.

He now also holds the record for the fewest balls to 50 maximums in T20Is among Full Member teams, achieving the milestone in just 331 balls. Abhishek is followed by Evin Lewis, who took 366 balls to achieve the feat.
