The 2013 Champions Trophy was held in England and Wales from June 6 to June 23. The hosts, England, qualified for the competition automatically, and they were joined by the seven other highest-ranked teams in the ICC ODI Championship.
Eight participating teams were divided into two groups, and each team played every other team once in the group stage. The top two teams from each group qualified for the semifinal of the tournament. The seventh edition of the tournament was hosted in three cities: London, Birmingham and Cardiff.
India beat England in the final and clinched their second Champions Trophy title. MS Dhoni and Co. defeated South Africa by 26 runs in the opening match of the tournament. In the second match, India beat West Indies by 8 wickets. The Men in Blue defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 8 wickets in their last group stage match and qualified for the semifinals. India beat Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the semi-final and reached the final.
Shikhar Dhawan was the leading run-getter of the tournament, scoring 363 runs in 5 matches at an average of 90.75. He also smashed two centuries and one fifty. Ravindra Jadeja picked up 12 wickets in five matches at an economy of 3.75 and was the leading wicket-taker of the tournament.
The Men in Blue defeated hosts England by 5 runs in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. The match was delayed for almost six hours due to heavy rain and was reduced to 20 overs per innings. The Three Lions won the toss and opted to bowl first in the overcast conditions. Alastair Cook and Co. got off to a great start as Stuart Broad removed Rohit Sharma on 9 runs in the fourth over.
Virat Kohli scored 43 runs off 34 balls with the help of four boundaries and one maximum. Shikhar Dhawan also amassed 31 runs off 24 balls, while Jadeja also made a valuable contribution with the bat and scored an unbeaten 33 runs off 25 balls with the help of two maximums and two boundaries. Ravi Bopara picked up three wickets while James Anderson, Stuart Broad and James Tredwell took one wicket each.
Chasing the target of 130 runs, England got off to a poor start as Umesh Yadav dismissed captain Cook on 2 runs in the second over. Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara batted well, but other batters failed to make any contribution as England fell 5 runs short of the target.
