New Delhi: New Zealand defeated West Indies by seven runs in the first ODI at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Sunday. Daryl Mitchel notched up a century while Kyle Jamieson picked up three wickets as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

Sent in to bat first after losing the toss, the hosts got off to a poor start as Matt Forde dismissed Rachin Ravindra for 4 runs and then removed Will Young for a duck in consecutive deliveries. Mitchell stitched a 67-run partnership with Devon Conway to steady the innings.

Justin Greaves dismissed Conway, who looked solid for his 49 runs off 58 balls, and Jayden Seales removed Tom Latham for 18 runs. Mitchell then forged another 69-run stand with Michael Bracewell to help the Blackcaps post a competitive total of 269/7 in 50 overs.

Mitchell held the innings together even as wickets continued to fall on the other end. He was battling through a groin issue that needed treatment in the 41st over. He scored his fifty from 61 balls and completed the century in 107 deliveries, finishing with 12 boundaries and two maximums before falling in the last over.

Chasing the target on a two-paced pitch, which also had an invariable bounce, the visitors never found rhythm. Jamieson dismissed Campbell for 4 runs. Alick Athanaze (29) and Keacy Carty (32) steadied the innings for the visitors, but consumed a lot of dot balls in the process.

Captain Shai Hope showed some aggression and scored 37 runs from 45 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford also completed his seventh ODI half-century, scoring 55 runs off 61 balls. After Rutherford's dismissal in the 46th over, Justin Greaves and Romario Shepherd gave the visitors a late push to keep the match alive until the last over.

Greaves smashed 38 runs from 24 balls, and Shepherd also scored 26 runs off 19 balls. The West Indies needed nine runs off the last two deliveries, and Jacob Duffy held his nerve as the visitors managed to score only one more run, finishing at 262/6. The second ODI of the three-match series will be played on November 19.
