A Baggy Green cap worn by Australian cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman fetched a whopping $460,000 (Rs 4.21 crore approx.) during an auction in Australia's Gold Coast. The landmark sale which took place at the Lloyds Auctions in Gold Coast, set the record for the highest price fetched by a cap worn by any cricketer.
The iconic cap was bought by an anonymous Australian collector. The buyer confirmed that the cap will be kept on display at a prominent Australian museum, ensuring that it remains accessible to the normal public.
Bradman wore the Baggy Green cap during the historic Test series against India in 1947-48, his last home series for Australia before he announced his retirement in 1948. The legendary Australian cricketer had gifted the cap to former India all-rounder Sriranga Wasudev Sohoni during the series.
Sohoni's family preserved the treasured cap for 75 years. The Baggy Green was never exhibited publicly or put up for sale until the family decided to give it to Lloyds Auctions. More than three generations of the former Indian cricketer's family took care of the cap which finally was auctioned this week.
“Unveil a piece of cricketing history with this stunning 1947–48 Australian Baggy Cap, crafted by Farmer’s Sydney and adorned with the Cricket Coat of Arms,” read the iconic cap's description on Lloyds Auction listing.
“Cherished in the family collection ever since, this cap links you to Don Bradman’s invincible era and a memorable exchange with the Indian squad.”
Baggy Green is the official cap worn by Australian Test cricketers. The cap, woollen and myrtle green in colour, is often associated with pride and the legacy of Australian cricket. Such Baggy Green caps from the era when Bradman played are rare, and only a few are known to exist today.
The rarity and the legacy associated with the iconic cap make it one of the most coveted and cherished pieces of memorabilia for an Australian cricket fan. The iconic cap's association with Bradman further enhances its value.
Bradman is regarded as one of the greatest batters to have graced the game. The legendary batter retired from Test cricket with an unparalleled average of 99.94, a stat that continues to define his legacy.
Bradman scored 6,9996 runs for Australia in 52 Test matches with an average of 99.94, including 29 centuries. He hit two triple centuries and led Australia's dominance in world cricket during his era.
