New Delhi: Sikkim skipper Leyong Lepcha opened up on playing against Rohit Sharma in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Wednesday, December 24. Rohit, who was representing Mumbai in the tournament, smashed a sensational 155 runs off just 94 balls. His knock helped Mumbai to register an 8-wicket win against Sikkim in Jaipur.
In an interview with PTI, Lepcha said that it was a great experience playing against Rohit Sharma, and they played pretty well while batting first. He further added that it was a great experience to watch the great man from this close up.
"I guess he was waiting for the loose balls. During the course of the game, I thought he respected the good balls and he capitalised on the loose balls. The scoring rate and the strike rate is very high when all these international players play. It was a treat watching him from so close and it was an honour," Lepcha said to PTI after the game.
The Sikkim skipper further added that it is a dream come true for all the Sikkim players to be on the same ground and play in the same match with a World-Cup-winning captain. Lepcha also said that he didn't get a chance to speak with Rohit as he's always surrounded by security.
"As you know, he’s a very big player, so I hope we get a chance to meet him after the match. I had a few chit chats with him when he was batting," he added.
Chasing the 236-run target in Jaipur, Rohit got off to a brilliant start, smashing maximums and boundaries and made light work of the challenge. He is closing in on 14,000 runs in the 50-over format, and the hundred against Sikkim was Rohit’s 37th century in List A cricket. It is his fourth ton besides the 33 hundreds in international cricket for India.
This was also his fastest hundred in the format, bettering the 63-ball ton against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
