New Delhi: Former India coach Rahul Dravid has praised Rohit Sharma for changing India's batting style in the shortest format, which helped the Men in Blue win the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies. Dravid and Rohit started a new chapter in limited-overs cricket for the Indian team, and asked the batters to play with a more aggressive style.
The new approach was evident during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where Rohit led from the front and helped the team to qualify for the final. He also ensured that India got over the finish line during the 2024 T20 World Cup final, to end a 17-year title drought in the format.
Speaking on 'Breakfast with Champions', Dravid said that when he joined as the head coach, he held a lot of discussions with Rohit about the direction they wanted to take the team in white-ball cricket.
"From the time I came in, a lot of the discussion with Rohit around was that we wanted to play a more aggressive brand of cricket. And we tried, we started right from the beginning because we could see that that's the way the game was evolving and Rohit deserves a lot of credit for it," Dravid said.
He further added that they kept moving in a particular direction and played the game with a lot more aggressive and positive way. The former India coach further added that he's glad they did that, as the team changed the look of T20 cricket.
While saying that Dravid only took a little part of the credit for this evolution, and again highlighted Rohit’s role as the leader of the outfit.
"It has to be driven by the leaders, right? It has to be driven by the captain. It has to be driven by the players because they’ve got to do it, right? They’ve got to take the risks," the former coach added.
He also said that the team management might be giving the players a certain amount of security, but in the end, they are the ones who need to take those risks.
