New Delhi: Rohit Sharma notched up his 50th international century, and Virat Kohli scored fifty as India defeated Australia by 9 wickets in the 3rd ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, October 25. The Aussies have won the three-match ODI series by 2-1.
Chasing the target of 237 runs, the Men in Blue got off to a great start as captain Shubman Gill and Rohit forged a 69-run partnership for the opening wicket. Hazlewood removed Gill for 24 runs in the 11th over with a good length delivery, and the Indian captain poked it to get an outside edge, which was pouched by the keeper.
After his dismissal, Rohit and Kohli batted well to forge an unbeaten match-winning 168-run partnership for the second wicket. Rohit scored an unbeaten 121 runs off 125 balls with the help of 13 boundaries and three maximums. Kohli, who scored consecutive ducks for the first time in his ODI career, made a great comeback, amassing an unbeaten 74 runs off 81 balls.
Kohli broke Kumar Sangakkara's record to become the second-highest run-getter in ODI history. He also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's (18436) record to become the leading run-scorer in white-ball cricket (ODIs + T20Is), amassing 18437 runs. Rohit becomes the only batter to smash five or more hundreds in all three formats of the game.
Opting to bat first, the hosts got off to a flying start as Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head stitched a 61-run partnership for the opening wicket. Head was removed by Siraj for 29 runs, while Axar Patel dismissed Marsh for 41 runs.
Kuldeep took time to assess the conditions, but Washington Sundar and Axar bowled well. They kept targeting the stumps and dried the boundaries to put pressure on the hosts. Matt Renshaw batted brilliantly, scoring 56 runs off 58 balls with the help of two boundaries.
But Harshit Rana returned with a sensational spell to remove the middle and lower order. He picked up four wickets, and Sundar took two wickets while Siraj, Kuldeep, Axar, and Prasidh picked up one wicket each as the Men in Blue won the last ODI comfortably. The five-match T20I series between both sides will start on October 29.
