New Delhi: Team India fast bowler Harshit Rana was sanctioned and given one demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his aggressive behaviour after removing South African batter Dewald Brevis during the first ODI at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.
The incident occurred in the 22nd over during South Africa's innings on Sunday, when Rana, after dismissing Brevis, gestured towards the direction of the dressing room, which could have provoked an aggressive response from the South African batter.
"Rana was found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The action was deemed that it could have provoked an aggressive response from the batter," said ICC in a statement.
The fast bowler was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which is related to 'using language, actions or gestures which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.
"In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Rana's disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in 24 months," added the ICC statement. A Level 1 breach carries a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent match fee , and one or two demerit points.
If a player reaches four or more demerit points within 24 months, they get converted into suspension points. If a player receives two suspension points, he could be banned from one Test, two ODIs or two T20Is.
India defeated South Africa by 17 runs in the first ODI in Ranchi to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Virat Kohli notched up a century, while Rohit and KL Rahul fit fifties to help India post 348/8 in 50 overs.
