New Delhi: Star India wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan will captain the East Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025, while Abhimanyu Easwaran has been named as vice-captain. Star fast bowler Mohammed Shami has also been included in the team.
Isham smashed consecutive fifties for Nottinghamshire in the County Cricket, while Shami last played competitive cricket for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
He last played a first-class game for Bengal during the Ranji Trophy in November, and a good performance in the Duleep Trophy might help him to make a return in the Indian team for the two-match Test series against the West Indies in October.
Young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who hit the fastest hundred in Youth ODIs during India U19's tour of England, is named in the standby list. Sudip Chatterjee, who was Bengal’s top run-scorer in the last Ranji Trophy season, was left out of the team, while Sudip Kumar Gharami, the second-highest run-getter, was named in the standbys.
Jharkhand batters Virat Singh and Sharandeep Singh are included in the team, and left-arm spinner Manishi, who picked up 22 wickets in seven games, is also named in the East Zone squad.
The Duleep Trophy matches are scheduled to be played at the BCCI Centre of Excellence grounds, with the tournament being played in a knockout format. South, Central, West, East, North and North East will compete in the Duleep Trophy from August 28.
Meanwhile, South Zone and West Zone have already qualified for the semifinals. The two quarterfinals, North Zone vs East Zone and Central Zone vs North East Zone, will take place from August 28, and the winners from these matches will advance to the semifinals, which are scheduled to begin from September 4, and the final will be played on September 11.
