KKR confirm release of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026 squad after BCCI directive

New Delhi: The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have confirmed the release of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman after the directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The franchise signed Rahman for Rs 9.20 crore in the IPL 2026 mini-auction, which was held in Abu Dhabi. Earlier, on January 3, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told PTI in Guwahati that KKR had been asked to release Rahman after recent developments in Bangladesh, where several incidents involving the killing of Hindus have been reported.

"The BCCI has asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from its squad. They can ask for a replacement if needed. And upon request, BCCI will allow a replacement player," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told PTI on Saturday.

'BCCI instructed to release Mustafizur Rahman from squad': KKR's official statement

Rahman has played eight IPL seasons so far, and previously featured for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), picking up 65 wickets in 60 matches at an economy of 8.13. KKR, in an official statement, said that the franchise can confirm that BCCI/IPL has instructed them to release Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL 2026 squad.

"Kolkata Knight Riders confirms that BCCI/IPL, as the regulator of IPL, has instructed it to release Mustafizur Rahman from the squad ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season," Kolkata Knight Riders said in an official statement.

“The release has been carried out following due process and consultations, upon the instruction of the Board of Control of Cricket in India. BCCI will allow Kolkata Knight Riders a replacement player in line with IPL regulations and further details will be communicated in due course," the statement added.

Rahman is the only Bangladesh player picked in the IPL 2026 auction and is currently participating in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for Rangpur Riders.
