New Delhi: South Africa defeated England by five runs in the second ODI at Lord's in London on Friday, September 5. This is the first ODI series win for the Proteas men in England since 1998, while the hosts have only managed to win just one out of 6 ODI bilateral series after the 2023 World Cup.

England won the toss and opted to bowl first, but the decision backfired quickly as Markram and Rickelton forged a 50-run partnership for the opening wicket. There was movement on offer for the new-ball bowlers, but they weren't consistent enough on line and length. Rickelton played positively and got off to a good start.

The hosts made a comeback as they picked up three wickets quickly (73/0 to 93/3) to change the flow of the match. Adil Rashid dismissed set batter Markram for 49 runs and also removed captain Temba Bavuma for 4 runs, while Jofra Archer dismissed Rickelton for 49 runs.

Breetzke and Stubbs batted brilliantly, as the duo mixed caution with aggression. They stitched a stunning 147-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Breetzke played sensational shots and smashed the ball all around the ground. He completed his fifth consecutive 50-plus score in ODIs. Both of them fell in quick succession, as Archer removed Breetzke for 85 runs while Stubbs got run out.

Brevis played a blazing cameo, scoring 43 runs off 20 balls with the help of three maximums and three boundaries. But once he departed, the visitors lost their way and only managed to score just 39 runs off the last 6 overs. They posted 330 runs on the scoreboard, which was difficult for the struggling England batting line-up.

Burger, Maharaj shine with the ball

The hosts got off to a poor start as Burger removed Jamie Smith on the first ball of the innings. But Joe Root batted with intent even though Ben Duckett struggled at the other end. He scored 61 runs off 72 balls and stitched two crucial partnerships with Duckett and Bethell to keep England in the match.

Bethell also played a blinder, scoring 58 runs off 40 balls, but both batters went in quick succession. Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Will Jacks also made crucial contributions. But one of them needed to stay till the end and take their side home. Burger removed Jacks for 39 runs, and the Proteas almost won the match.

Jofra Archer tried his best and nearly pulled off a late heist, but Muthusamy held his nerve in the last over to win the match for the visitors as they take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The third and final ODI of the series will be played at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on September 7.
