New Delhi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering selling the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultans. According to an ESPNcricinfo report, the board is reversing its position on delaying the sale of the franchise.
The PCB is involved in active discussions to sell off the Multan Sultans as soon as legally possible. The officials of the PCB and PSL are in support of the proposal, and the final decision will be taken by Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
The PSL is delighted by the sale of two new teams, Hyderabad and Sialkot. The two franchises were sold at a high price of PKR 1.75 and PKR 1.85 billion, respectively. The PCB conducted an auction to sell the two new teams, which exceeded the board's expectations.
PSL officials believe that this is the right time to sell Multan Sultans and secure the highest possible price for the franchise. The Sultan has featured in eight PSL seasons and won the trophy in 2021. Due to this, PSL officials are confident that a sale before the start of the season would fetch the highest fees.
After the franchise auction on Thursday, Naqvi said that he had personally taken on the challenge of running the Sultans in the upcoming season to demonstrate that it would turn a profit. However, nothing has been finalised on the matter so far.
"As soon as the PSL ends, we will auction the franchise off, and in the next eight to ten days, we will appoint an acting head to run the franchise," Naqvi said in December 2025. After this, there has been no announcement of the head coach or other officials to run the Multan Sultans. Naqvi also said that the sale of the Sultans, along with two new teams in the auction, was prevented by the PPRA (Public Procurement Regulatory Authority).
Tareen, who was the previous owner of the Multan Sultans, walked away after having a number of disagreements with the league officials. If the PCB decide to push a sale through before the start of the PSL, it will have to be done as soon as possible.
The new edition of the PSL starts on March 26, but there's no information on the dates of the draft or auction for the squads. There is no decision at this stage on how many players each existing franchise should be able to retain for the upcoming season, and whether a draft or auction will be used to fill squads.
