Life has its own ways of surprising us, and no one can truly predict where destiny will lead. Such has been the story of Benjamin Calitz, a left-handed batter and wicketkeeper whose cricketing journey has already taken him across three countries before finding a home in Ireland.

Born in Vancouver, Canada, in July 2002 to South African parents, Calitz spent parts of his childhood in South Africa and Namibia, places where cricket quietly began to shape his ambitions. His first major breakthrough came in 2020 when he represented Canada at the Under-19 World Cup. Just as momentum was building, however, a serious injury forced him to the sidelines for seven months, which tested his resolve.

Looking for opportunities abroad, Calitz originally planned a stint in the UK as an overseas player, followed by time in Australia. But when he arrived in Belfast, things changed. He quickly felt at home, enjoying both the environment and the cricketing opportunities, and decided to make Ireland the base for his career. From club cricket, he worked his way up into the domestic circuit, and in 2024, he announced himself with a composed unbeaten century in the Inter-Provincial Cup.

Although wicketkeeping adds an extra dimension to his game, it is with the bat that Calitz has built his reputation. Steady performances in the domestic arena earned him a maiden international call-up in September 2025 for Ireland’s T20I series against England.
