New Delhi: Prithvi Shaw failed to make an impact on the Ranji Trophy debut for Maharashtra, as he fell for a four-ball duck against Kerala on Wednesday, October 15. Shaw looked impressive in the warm-up game ahead of the tournament, but was trapped plumb in front of the stumps by fast bowler MD Nidheesh.
Not just Shaw, but the other three Maharashtra batters were dismissed for a duck in the first 20 balls of the match. Young batter Arshin Kulkarni, No. 3 batter Siddhesh Veer, and skipper Ankit Bawne himself returned to the dugout early, while Saurabh Nawale scored 12 runs, leaving Maharashtra reeling in the morning session.
Kerala got off to a great start after opting to bowl first against Maharashtra at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Nidheesh removed Shaw and Siddhesh in the first over on consecutive deliveries, while Nedumankuzhy dismissed Kulkarni in the next over. He also removed Ankit Bawne for a duck in the fourth over of the match.
After the top-order collapse, Ruturaj Gaikwad steadied the innings with support from veteran Jalaj Saxena. Shaw’s poor performance came just a few days after a sensational innings of 181 runs off 219 deliveries in a practice match. In that game, Shaw played attacking cricket against his former team, Mumbai.
However, his knock wasn’t the massive talking point of that warm-up match, as the opener was involved in an ugly spat with his former teammate Musheer Khan after his dismissal. After making an impressive debut in 2018, Shaw’s stature in Indian cricket has gradually declined. Despite a promising start, the batter has struggled to maintain consistency and has often found himself at the centre of controversies both on and off the field.
