New Delhi: Team India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is dropped from the three-match ODI series against Australia, which is set to begin from October 19 in Perth. His non-selection raised many eyebrows, but Jadeja said that the communication from the team management has been smooth. He had retired from T20Is after winning the World Cup last year, but has ambitions of playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
"Selection is not in my hands. I want to play, for sure. "[At the] end of the day, team management, selectors, coach and captain have their thoughts and they will have their reasons for not selecting me for this series. They have talked to me, it was not a surprise for me after the squad was announced," Jadeja said at his press conference after the second day's play against West Indies in the Delhi Test.
Jadeja further added that it is a good thing that they communicated the reason behind his omission, and he's happy about that. The all-rounder also said that whenever he gets a chance next, he will try and do what he has done all these years.
"Winning the World Cup is everyone's dream. We had narrowly missed out the last time, the next time we will try and make up for it," Jadeja added.
His omission was one of the five changes from the ODI squad that had won the Champions Trophy in Dubai. After announcing the squads, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that Jadeja is still part of their future plans in ODI cricket, but there will be competition for spots.
Agarkar further added that they could only carry two spin all-rounders and get some balance in the team. He also said that Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav are in the team, and the selectors don't think the team is going to need more than that in Australia.
Jadeja has picked up 231 wickets and also scored 2806 runs in 204 ODI matches. In the 2025 Champions Trophy, he took five wickets in five innings at an economy rate of 4.35. The Men in Blue will play three ODI matches in Australia on October 19, 23 and 25, followed by five T20I games between October 29 and November 8.
