New Delhi: Team India has suffered a massive blow ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand as Rishabh Pant has been ruled out due to an abdominal injury. Pant was hit by a delivery during the practice at the VCA Stadium.
Pant is the backup wicketkeeper in the ODI squad for the three-match series behind KL Rahul, and hence, there is no need for another keeper for Sunday's opener. According to the BCCI, Pant experienced discomfort in his right lateral abdominal area after getting hit by the ball, and an MRI scan was also conducted to assess the extent of his injury.
"The BCCI Medical Team had a detailed discussion with an expert on his clinical and radiological findings. Pant has been diagnosed with a side strain (Oblique Muscle Tear) and is subsequently ruled out of the ODI Series," the BCCI said in statement.
There was an optional practice session on Saturday for the Men in Blue, and Pant opted to spend some time at the nets, where he got hit by the delivery.
Apart from Pant, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj and Shreyas Iyer also practised on Saturday. Captain Shubman Gill also turned up for the optional practice session and addressed the pre-series press conference.
The BCCI has named Dhruv Jurel as Rishabh Pant's replacement, and he has already joined the squad. Jurel is Uttar Pradesh’s highest run-getter in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 558 runs in seven matches at an average of over 90. He smashed two hundreds and four fifties in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.
His brilliant batting form has helped Uttar Pradesh to secure the top position in the Elite Group B points table, earning 28 points from seven successive wins till now.
India's updated ODI squad: Shubman Gill (C), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Shreyas Iyer (VC), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd Siraj, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel (WK).
