New Delhi: In a massive blow ahead of India's home Test season, Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan has been ruled out of the Duleep Trophy due to an injury. He was set to play for the defending champions, West Zone, in their semifinal match against Central Zone at the BCCI's CoE in Bengaluru on September 4.
He scored consecutive centuries for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu Tournament in Chennai, but suffered a quadriceps injury, which ruled him out of the Duleep Trophy, report the Times of India. Sarfaraz was dropped from India's squad for the five-match Test series against England, but the middle-order batter played sensational knocks in the Buchi Babu Tournament.
He scored a run-a-ball 111 against Haryana, and smashed 138 runs off 114 balls against TNCA XI in Mumbai's opening game of the tournament. Sarfaraz is likely to be replaced by Baroda's Shivalik Sharma, who was named among the reserves for the West Zone. He has played 18 first-class matches and scored 1087 runs at an average of 43.48, including three hundreds and five half-centuries.
"Sarfaraz is suffering from a quadriceps injury, which he picked up while scoring a century against Haryana in the Buchi Babu event five days ago. He's set to be out for almost three weeks and is currently rehabilitating at the CoE," a source told TOI.
According to the same report, India's Test wicketkeeper, Dhruv Jurel, who was appointed captain of the Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy, has been ruled out of the semifinal against the West Zone due to a groin injury. He also missed the opening match of the tournament against the North East Zone due to the injury, and failed to recover for the semifinal against the West Zone from September 4.
He will be replaced by Uttar Pradesh wicketkeeper Upendra Yadav in the Central Zone team, while Kuldeep Yadav is set to report for the Asia Cup 2025, and has been replaced by Vidarbha fast bowler Yash Thakur.
