New Delhi: Seasoned Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, who has been out of action for a while due to an on-field injury, has been advised further rest by the medical team, as reported by India Today. Iyer, who sustained an injury to his spleen while completing a catch in the third ODI match against Australia in Sydney, has been out of action since then.
The report in the publication mentions that he will remain out of action for an extended period as latest medical evaluations have advised him to avoid any workout and remain in the rehabilitation programme. This has ruled out the senior batter from the ODI series against South Africa which would be played after the ongoing Test series. He is currently recovering from the abdominal injury he suffered during the Australia series.
Iyer had landed awkwardly on his stomach while completing a catch running backwards during the game against the Aussies. The injury was severe that caused damage to his spleen with internal bleeding. He underwent a procedure to control the bleeding and was shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for observation before being discharged once his condition stabilised.
As a result of his extended medical break, he will miss the South Africa ODI series and the series against New Zealand thereafter. This has been taken as a precautionary measure so as to keep him fit for the next season. The 29-year-old cricketer has currently returned home and has been advised some medical rest. He can though resume his daily routine but keep a check on his workout regime and exhaustion levels.
The report further mentions that he has underwent a USG scan just a few days back which turned out to be positive and will undergo another one in next couple of months.
