New Delhi: India skipper Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the opening Test against South Africa after suffering a neck injury on Day 2 at Eden Gardens. Gill was taken to the hospital for further examination after the stumps on day 2 and is currently under observation. The BCCI confirmed that he will take no further part in the match and will continue to be monitored by its medical team.
Gill came to bat on day 2 after the dismissal of Washington Sundar. He played two dot balls and smashed a boundary over backward square on the next ball. He immediately held his neck in pain just after that. The Indian skipper got attention from the physio, but he walked off the field. His neck looked very stiff when he marched towards the dressing room, and he wasn't moving it at all.
According to an NDTV report, the Indian skipper has been kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since the start, but only for observation. Gill's participation in the second Test in Guwahati is also doubtful.
He didn’t come back to bat after that and couldn’t take the field as well when the visitors began their second innings. His deputy, Rishabh Pant, had to take up the captaincy role. A little while after stumps on Day 2, Gill had to be stretchered out of the stadium.
Gill has been playing non-stop cricket across formats since captaining India for the first time in the five-match Test series against England earlier this year, and barely had any rest. He also played in the Asia Cup and a few domestic games before joining the side in Australia for the white-ball series that ended at the Gabba on Saturday.
"Yeah, I think we first need to determine how he got the neck stiffness, maybe just a bad night's sleep. I don't think it's, or we can put it down to the load,” Morkel said, when asked if Gill’s packed multi-format calendar was a factor.
The Men in Blue were bowled out for 189 runs, taking a slender lead of 30 runs. Harmer picked up four wickets, and Jansen also took three wickets. South Africa walked out to bat in the second innings and were 93/7 at stumps on day 2. Ravindra Jadeja picked up four wickets and Kuldeep Yadav also took two wickets.
