India Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill will not take a break to reenergise and rejuvenate after a demoralising loss against New Zealand on home soil, and instead return to action three days after the ODI series' conclusion in his state team, Punjab's next Ranji Trophy game against Saurashtra at Rajkot, starting Thursday.
The Men In Blue suffered a damaging 1-2 ODI series loss under the captaincy of Gill, who endured a forgettable outing both as a captain and a batter, as the Kiwis registered their first ODI series win on Indian soil.
While the shocking defeat requires time and space for introspection, Gill has decided against taking the rest. Not part of the T20 World Cup squad, Gill will straightaway return to red-ball action to help Punjab in their knockout quest in the Ranji Trophy.
"Shubman decided against taking any break post ODI series and it took him eight hours to reach Rajkot from Indore as there aren't any direct flights, available," a source close to the Punjab team told PTI.
Punjab, placed sixth in Group B with 11 points from five matches, face a tough battle to qualify for the knockouts of the premier domestic red-ball tournament.
The only realistic chance for Punjab would be outright victories in all their remaining three fixtures.
Gill's return to the domestic setup and subsequently his presence in the batting order will be crucial to Punjab's slim chances in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 campaign.
If Gill takes the field against domestic heavyweights Saurashtra, it will be his first red-ball appearance since he suffered a neck injury during the Test series against South Africa, which forced him to the sidelines for a long spell.
While Punjab will benefit greatly from Gill's return, the 26-year-old himself will see the Ranji games to regain form and build match fitness.
