SMAT 2025-26: Samson, Asif star in Kerala's victory over Mumbai; Bhuvneshwar shines in UP's win

New Delhi: Sanju Samson and KM Asif delivered brilliant performances as Kerala beat Mumbai by 15 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Samson, who opened the innings, laid the platform by scoring 46 runs off 28 balls, but Vishnu Vinod struggled with the timing and only managed to score an unbeaten 43 runs off 40 balls. Sharafuddeen's unbeaten 35 runs off 15 balls took the team to 178/5 in 20 overs.

Chasing the target, Mumbai got off to a poor start as Sharafuddeen removed Ayush Mhatre in the first over. Ajinkya Rahane (32) and Sarfaraz Khan (52) forged an 80-run partnership to keep Mumbai going. Abdul Basith removed Sarfaraz when Mumbai needed 80 runs in the last eight overs.

Suryakumar Yadav brought the equation down to 31 runs required from three overs. But Asif picked up three wickets, including Suryakumar on 32, to derail Mumbai. They needed 18 runs in the last over with two wickets remaining, and Asif took only four balls to wrap up the innings and complete his five-wicket haul.

Bhuvneshwar shines as Uttar Pradesh beat Chandigarh

Bhuvneshwar Kumar continues to deliver sensational performances in domestic cricket, helping Uttar Pradesh (UP) to beat Chandigarh by 40 runs in Kolkata. He picked up three wickets to restrict Chandigarh to 172/8 after UP scored 212/7 in 20 overs.

Sameer Rizvi scored 70 runs off 42 balls with the help of six boundaries and three maximums. Opener Madhav Kaushik also amassed 67 runs off 41 balls, smashing seven boundaries and two maximums.

Rizvi and Kaushik forged an 86-run partnership. Rizvi and Kaushik were involved in a third-wicket partnership of 86 runs, which laid the foundation for UP's total in excess of 200. Sandeep Sharma picked up four wickets, while Jagjit Singh and Nikhil Sharma took one wicket each.

Chasing the target, Chandigarh got off to a disastrous start as they lost two wickets with just 19 runs on the board. Bhuvneshwar removed Nehal Pajni for a duck and Arjun Azad for 1 run.

However, Manan Vohra kept Chandigarh alive in the run chase, smashing 61 runs off 35 balls, with the help of six boundaries and three maximums. After Vohra's dismissal, wicketkeeper Nikhil Thakur (32) and Amrit Lubana (30) batted well, but their team fell short by plenty of runs in the end.

In other matches, Ayush Badoni's 53 runs off 35 balls and four wickets with the ball helped Delhi to beat Karnataka by 45 runs. Priyansh Arya and Tejasvi Dahiya also notched up fifties as Delhi scored 232 runs in the 20 overs. Devdutt Padikkal then smashed 62 runs off 38 balls, while Ravichandran Smaran also struck 72 runs off 38 balls. But, other batters failed to make any contribution with the bat as Karnataka were bowled out for 187 in 19.3 overs.

Pacer Raj Limbani took 3 wickets, and all-rounder Atit Sheth also picked two as Baroda beat Gujarat by eight wickets in Hyderabad. Hardik Pandya also picked up 1 wicket in four overs, and scored 10 runs off six balls in the chase.
