London has taken a confident step towards hosting the 2029 World Athletics Championship with the British government officially throwing its weight behind the bid. The capital is hoping to bring the best athletes back to the London Stadium, which holds special memories in the hearts of many players and sports fans.

The 2012 Olympic Games and the 2017 World Championships were held in the same stadium. The plan was announced on Saturday and also includes a bid to host the 2029 World Para Athletics Championships, reflecting the UK's commitment to inclusivity. In a statement, the government confirmed that it would provide significant funding for both bids, provided that partner funding is secured.

This financial backing underlines the UK's ambition to continue its legacy of hosting major international sporting events and to inspire the next generation of athletes across the country. The statement read, “Subject to funding from partners being confirmed, the government has agreed to provide significant funding for both bids, reflecting the UK’s ambition to once again bring the world’s greatest athletes to UK shores."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed his enthusiasm for the bid, highlighting how hosting the championships would benefit the nation beyond sport. He said in a statement, “I’m delighted to support the bid. The event would provide a boost for UK businesses and support jobs as well as bring our communities together."

London looks to build on past success

The announcement came as London hosted a Diamond League meeting on Saturday, reinforcing the city's reputation as a hub of athletics. This year's World Championships will be held in Tokyo in September, with Beijing set to host the 2027 edition. London's bid for 2029 aims to continue the tradition of bringing world-class athletics to the city, providing a stage where the world's top athletes can compete and where fans can create memories that last a lifetime.
