New Delhi: Team India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been cleared to join the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which will begin on January 11. He was named in India's squad earlier this month, pending fitness clearance.
After proving his match fitness in the domestic 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy, the middle-order batter will now join the squad on Friday, two days away from the opening match against New Zealand in Vadodara.
He is set to return to international cricket after suffering a spleen injury while attempting a catch in the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25. The Indian vice-captain was admitted to the hospital due to internal bleeding from a spleen laceration. He missed the home ODI series against South Africa, but has recovered since.
He warmed up for the ODI series against New Zealand by scoring 82 and 45 for Mumbai in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the absence of Shardul Thakur, Shreyas also captained Mumbai's team in those two games.
Most of the Indian ODI squad arrived in Vadodara on January 7. The city will host its first men's international game in more than 15 years on Sunday. The newly built Kotambi Stadium has already hosted the WPL and women's ODIs.
Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja are yet to arrive in Vadodara ahead of the first ODI against New Zealand. The four named players were part of their respective domestic teams in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
All players were scheduled to report in Vadodara on Wednesday, January 7, but Iyer, Pant, Siraj, and Jadeja had to delay their arrival because of the VHT commitments. These four players will be joining the squad on Friday, January 9.
