New Delhi: Australia’s men’s T20 team scripted history in St. Kitts as they clinched a three-wicket win in the fifth and final T20I against the West Indies with three overs remaining. They sealed a flawless 5-0 series whitewash, something they had never achieved in a five-match T20 series before. It was a gritty finish to a dominant tour with Aaron Hardie holding his nerve at the death to ensure the visitors crossed the line.
Aussies had to chase 171 and with top order collapse Australia slipped to 25/3 after Glenn Maxwell fell for a golden duck. But the middle-order , led by Cameron Green, Mitch Owen, and Tim David, responded in counterattacking style. Owen, in just his debut series smashed 37 off 16 balls including a six that sailed out of Warner Park. Green continued his purple patch with a quickfire 32 while David chipped in with 30 off just 12. These cameos turned the tide after a rocky start and allowed Hardie to finish the job with an unbeaten 28.
Earlier, the Windies had posted 170 in 19.4 overs with Ben Dwarshuis grabbing three wickets, and Nathan Ellis chipping in with two. Despite a strong opening stand, the home side lost momentum in the second half of their innings and were bowled out with two balls remaining.
While the result sealed the series, the day also belonged to Adam Zampa, who became only the fourth Australian to play 100 T20 internationals and the first bowler to reach the milestone. The leg-spinner who is also now Australia’s most successful T20I bowler with 124 wickets, marked the occasion with a typically tidy spell and reflected on the team’s evolving identity.
“It’s a proud moment,” Zampa said. “I’ve always wanted to own this spot. To be part of a team that’s transitioning and winning at the same time is really special.”
Zampa also pointed to the fresh faces in the squad- Mitch Owen, Matt Kuhnemann, and Hardie as key to Australia’s growing T20 depth. With the 2026 T20 World Cup in India on the horizon, he believes this mix of youth and experience bodes well.
Australia now joins India as the only top-tier teams to complete a 5-0 whitewash in a T20I series of five or more matches. India had achieved the feat in 2020 against New Zealand. Over the years this sort of clean sweep has happened only six times across all nations despite the format’s growing popularity.
The Aussies, notably without the likes of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc have unearthed a new core. If this series is any indication, Australia’s future in the shortest format looks exciting and they might just be peaking at the right time.
