New Delhi: England defeated New Zealand by 8 wickets in the 27th match of the Women's ODI World Cup 2025 at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, October 26. Amy Jones played a match-winning knock, and Linsey Smith picked up three wickets.
England have already qualified for the semifinals of the tournament along with hosts India, Australia and South Africa, while New Zealand have been knocked out. Sophie Devine, who played the last match of her career, received a guard of honour from both teams after the game. She shook hands with everyone and walked out of the ground for one last time.
Chasing the target of 169 runs, England got off to a great start as Amy and Tammy Beaumont forged a 75-run partnership for the opening wicket. Lea Tahuhu dismissed Beaumont for 40 runs with a good length delivery, and the opener missed the forward defence as the ball hit on the front pad. She immediately took the review, but it was three reds on the big screen.
After her dismissal, Amy stitched another match-winning 83-run partnership with Heather Knight for the second wicket and completed her fifty. England needed just 10 runs to win when Devine came back to remove Knight for 33 runs and picked up her last ODI wicket. Amy smashed consecutive boundaries to help England register a dominant win before the semifinal. She scored an unbeaten 86 runs off 92 balls with the help of 11 boundaries and one maximum.
New Zealand got off to a poor start after opting to bat first as Linsey Smith removed Suzie Bates for 10 runs. After her dismissal, England's bowlers struggled to capitalise on the start as Amelia Kerr and Plimmer forged a 68-run partnership for the second wicket.
They got their act together after the power play to restrict New Zealand to a below-par total. Charlie Dean removed Plimmer for 43 runs, and Capsey dismissed Kerr for 35 runs. Sophie Devine scored 23 runs off 25 balls in her last game and was dismissed by Nat Sciver-Brunt.
After their dismissal, New Zealand's middle and lower order failed to contribute with the bat. Smith picked up three wickets, while Sciver-Brunt and Capsey took two wickets each. England will take on South Africa in the first semifinal of the Women's ODI World Cup in Guwahati on October 29.
