New Delhi: Team India batter Jemimah Rodrigues smashed a sensational century in the second semifinal of the Women's ODI World Cup at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, October 30. Chasing the massive target of 339 runs, she completed her third ODI hundred in 115 balls with the help of 10 boundaries.
The Women in Blue got off to a disappointing start while chasing the historic target, as Kim Garth removed Shafali Verma for 10 runs in the second over. She picked up her second wicket of the game, dismissing in-form Smriti Mandhana for 24 runs. After their dismissal, Rodrigues stitched a crucial 167-run partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur for the third wicket.
The India skipper was dismissed by Annabel Sutherland for 89 runs, but Rodrigues continued to bat brilliantly and smashed her century in the knockout game. The Women in Blue lost another wicket in the chase, as Deepti Sharma got run-out for 24 runs in the 41st over.
Earlier, the defending champions got off to a disappointing start after electing to bat first in the knockout match. Kranti Gaud removed captain Alyssa Healy for just five runs in the sixth over. After her dismissal, Ellyse Perry and Phoebe Litchfield stitched a 155-run partnership for the second wicket.
Both batters played attacking shots to put pressure on the Indian bowlers. Amanjot Kaur removed Litchfield for 119 runs, which allowed Team India to make come comeback in the match. Beth Mooney (24) and Sutherland (3) failed to make any big contribution. Radha Yadav removed in-form Ellyse Perry for 77 runs as the Women in Blue looked to restrict the Aussies under 310.
But Ashleigh Gardner played a great innings, scoring 63 runs off 45 balls with the help of four maximums and four boundaries. She forged a crucial 66-run partnership with Kim Garth, helping Australia to post a historic target on the board. The winner of this knockout game will face South Africa in the final on November 2.
