New Delhi: India's star men's doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty qualified for the semi-finals of the Denmark Open, while Lakshya Sen was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the men's singles event on Friday, October 17.
Satwik-Chirag, who won bronze at the BWF World Championships, beat Rian Ardianto and Rahmat Hidayat 21-15, 18-21, 21-16 in a hard-fought quarterfinal clash on Friday.
They will take on Japan's Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in the next round of the tournament. After registering an easy win in the first game, Satwik-Chirag were troubled by Ardianto and Hidayat in the second round as the Indonesian duo forced a decider after a strong comeback.
The Indian pair went to the drawing board and made a sensational comeback in the third and final game, tightening their defence and also improving against the Indonesian pair in the net exchanges, which helped them secure a victory. Satwik-Chirag beat Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley of Scotland, and the Chinese Taipei duo of Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan in the opening two rounds.
Lakshya Sen suffered a straight games loss against the seventh-seeded Alex Lanier 9-21, 14-21. The match lasted just 44 minutes as the Frenchman made it look easy against the Indian shuttler.
After defeating World No.2 and local hero Anders Antonsen in straight games on Thursday, Lakshya appeared to be a bit fatigued in the clash against Lanier. The Frenchman showed his class and dominated the first completely by taking an early 8-2 lead.
The Indian shuttler made a lot of unforced errors and also faltered at the net a few times. He took an early 3-1 lead in the second game before Lanier made a comeback to win nine consecutive points and change the match in his favour, closing out the game with ease.
