New Delhi: The football world has been struck with another tragedy following the death of Billy Vigar who was a former Arsenal academy forward died after sustaining a severe head injury while playing for Chichester City in an Isthmian League Premier Division match.

Vigar collapsed during Chichester's clash against Wingate & Finchley on September 20 after colliding with a wall at the side of the pitch while chasing the ball. The game was halted for 13 minutes as medical teams rushed in. He was immediately placed in an induced coma and later underwent an operation to relieve the pressure on his brain. Sadly, he passed away five days later as confirmed by his club on Thursday.

His family, in a statement released through Chichester City, shared their devastation. “We are heartbroken that this has happened while Billy was playing the sport he loved,” they said. The club also confirmed that their scheduled weekend fixture against Lewes has been postponed.

Vigar's career

Vigar was born in Worthing in 2003 and began his journey with Arsenal's youth setup in 2017. He was a versatile and hardworking forward who signed a professional deal with the Gunners in 2022 but never made a senior appearance. Still, his progress through the ranks was admired by coaches and teammates.

He also spent time on loan with Derby County's Under-21 side and had short spells with Eastbourne Borough and Hastings United before joining Chichester City. At the non-league club, Vigar had established himself as a key figure who is known for his tenacity and ability to adapt across attacking roles.

Tributes pour in

The loss of such a young player has left clubs and governing bodies across English football in mourning. Arsenal, his boyhood club, released a statement saying, “Everyone at Arsenal is devastated by the shocking news. Billy will always be remembered as a valued member of our academy.”

The English FA also expressed condolences, calling out the incident a heartbreaking reminder of the risks involved in the game. Meanwhile, Chichester City’s league has announced that all matches this weekend will begin with a minute’s silence and players will wear black armbands in his memory.

Billy Vigar's passing at just 21 is a cruel reminder of how fragile life can be. Though his professional career was only beginning, his memory will endure through teammates, coaches and supporters who saw not only his talent but also his love for the game.
