New Delhi: Inter Miami CF captain Lionel Messi was named the 2025 MLS MVP on Tuesday, December 9. He assisted twice as Miami defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 on Saturday to clinch the MLS Cup. Messi is the first player in league history to win the award in two consecutive seasons.

He played a crucial role in the victory, assisting Rodrigo de Paul in the 71st minute of the game and Tadeo Allende in second-half stoppage time. The 38-year-old also won the league's Golden Boot, which is awarded to the top scorer, after Messi scored 29 goals in the 2025 regular season.

With assists, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner had made 48 goal contributions across 28 MLS matches in 2025, which is the second most in a single season, including at least three contributions in nine games, another league record.

The 38-year-old also became the first player in the history of MLS to record 10 multi-goal matches in a single season, breaking the previous record of eight, which was previously shared by Stern John, Mamadou Diallo, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Messi scored several goals in five consecutive games from May 28 to July 12, becoming the first MLS player to have a multi-goal streak of more than four matches and netting 10 times in that period.

Messi joins Preki in elite list

After winning the MLS MVP award for the second consecutive year, the Argentinian has joined legendary Serbian player Predrag Radosavljević (Preki) as the only players to win the league's MVP award twice. Preki has won the award in 1997 and 2003 with Kansas City.

Messi has already won eight Ballon d'Or titles, eight Pichichi trophies as La Liga's leading goal-scorer, six La Liga best player awards, three Best FIFA Men's Player awards, three UEFA Men's Player of the Year awards, two FIFA World Cup Golden Balls and no fewer than 15 selections as Argentina's best player in a given year.

He also lifted 47 trophies for club and country, including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, making him the most decorated player in the men's game.
